BAMBOO / ZEN GARDEN:
The property has one of the only bamboo gardens in Kentucky. The owners are lovers of nature and all things green. They collect and cultivate rare Japanese bamboo. These are the hardiest varieties that will grow to a maximum of 45 feet with 2 inch diameters in this climate.
A newly landscaped dry creek bed marks the divide from vegetable & fruit gardens and where the bamboo begins. Asian art is also found hidden among the lush green and yellow striped canes.
The bamboo area is also equipped with underground power and water for future expansion and mood or security lighting.

The three main varieties are:
- Japanese Vivax
- Japanese Aureosulcata
- Japanese Bissetti
We also have Yellow Arrow Bamboo, Moso and a selection of dwarf varieties.
The Japanese Bamboo & Zen Garden has several path ways some of which end in enclosures to read or meditate. Bamboo is evergreen and makes a great privacy fence / barrier. Inside the dense foliage you hear only the rustle of the leaves which adds you in your daily meditation. The main bamboo area is oval shape about 90 feet in diameter. There are other smaller groves of bamboo as well.

Bamboo Shoots from early April to the end of June. The above varieties were chosen for their size and flavor. We harvest shoots every year. For those of you who have never had FRESH BAMBOO SHOOTS you can forget about the canned stuff. Fresh bamboo shoot is very light and has a taste similar to white asparagus, but only 1/10th of the flavor. The flavor is very mild and best experienced by light steaming with a little butter and sea salt. Used and enjoyed primarily for its texture and color.

ART:
The current owners are skilled stone, ceramic, wood and metal craft artists. Most of the current projects arise from a need to make the property look better while concealing many of the mechanical and electrical utilities. So instead of building a simple and ugly box to achieve this, we take the time to design and form a functional yet uniquely artistic designs.

VEGETABLE / FRUIT / HERB GARDENS:
Surprisingly I have very few shots of the fruit or vegetables that we grow. Below is a shot of sweet red chilies that we grow every year. Unlike the hot ,hot variety these are far more mild, but still have some bite to them. Local produce is easy to come by as there are many farmers markets in the area and some of our neighbors have nurseries and greenhouse which furnish fresh tomatoes, strawberries & blueberries. We tend to grow only varieties which are harder to find or just taste so much better right out of the garden. We have 5 major fruit and vegetable beds ( meaning 375+ sq. ft. min. per bed all with electrical & water ).

FLOWER GARDENS:
We have 5 major flower beds ( meaning 450+ sq. ft. min. per bed all with electrical & water ) in which we grow a wide array of annuals and perennials. Below are just a select few of those that we have photos of. Two of the 5 beds have stuccoed concrete walls with custom wall caps and one is solid poured concrete in the shape of a star. ( see below )

OUTDOOR EATING & SITTING AREAS:
It seems like we are always building something new. Below I will cover areas that both completed and or under construction.
Pergola: 45 feet long X 8 feet wide. Floor is a poured concrete boarder stained near black with Kimono concrete stain. Center floor area has a border of hand made small concrete paver circles stained shades of brown and tan and antiqued to look old. Larger paver circles are standard 12" diameter concrete stained to match the vintage look.
Vertical columns are 6" X 6" pressure treated lumber (to last longer). Columns have been hand carved / tooled with added wooden moldings that accent the center points. Horizontal beams are also 6" X 6" pressure treated lumber 10' long and held in place by hand made iron "T" fixtures. The long horizontal stretchers are 6" X 2" pressure treated lumber that are securely bolted to the substructure.
Purple wisteria lines each column on the Northern most side and blooms in the spring. During the summer, the wisteria gives the pergola a wonderful canopy. Great place to sit in the shade and read or have afternoon tea.

Romulus & Remus Fountain Fixture : This fountain fixture is heavy duty cast iron (weighs 800 lbs) and is faux painted to look like antique bronze. It features two Wolf Heads and two Human Baby Heads. Top basin is copper and it is removable to access the inside area which can houses electrical and water lines for pumps. Fountain stands about 4 feet tall and is on a 9" pedestal. Diameter is 38"! Metal thickness is well over 1/4 inch! Water and electrical are already set in the area. Idea was to buy one of these concrete 12 feet diameter above ground fountain basin sectionals as a surround and the pour a concrete slab around the fountain fixture. Truly a one of a kind piece of sculpture that will make a magnificent Moorish or Spanish style large fountain someday soon.

Mayan Well Cover: Solid poured concrete one of a kind mold in the style of the ancient Maya. Acid stained to look 1000+ years old with in laid scenes featuring Gods of the Sun, Water, Land and Fire. The cover spans 9+ feet in diameter and is 9+ inches thick it has a 2.5 foot wide hole in the center to service the well pumps. A bronze dome covers the center hole and makes for easy access. This water is NOT used for anything any more as we have county / city water. You could re-route water to gardens for free water if you wanted. This is the original hand dug and stone lined homestead well. Depth of the well is about 15 feet and the water level is kept at about 4 feet at all times by automatic pumps.

Rose Gardens / Raised Garden Walls: Constructed with poured concrete foundations and 8" thick concrete block walls that are reinforced with steel. Walls are on average 2 feet tall. The walls are coated with hi-tech re-enforced stucco for long life. Capped with 2"+ thick custom made ledges hand made from stone composites. Caps will be antiqued and stained to look as though they have been there for 100+ years. Both gardens are set up with underground electrical and water. There are separate water lines that feed both slow feed sprinklers / drip lines and main lines that allow high pressure for hoses hook ups. These are set up for flower beds / rose gardens so they have great drainage and excellent top soil in them now. These could be converted to hold water for: fountains, pools, fish ponds, koi ponds etc. Total area is perhaps 1200 sq. ft. for both gardens combined.

Sugar Maple Ring / Walls: This is a ring around the large maple nearest to the house. The interior of the ring is lined with sand, but a flower bed could easily be made from this as well. We built this area for our two Labrador retrievers who love to dig in the soft sand. After digging, they lay down in the cool sand and survey their domain while under the shade of a 75 year old sugar maple tree. Constructed with poured concrete foundations and 8" thick concrete block walls that are reinforced with steel. The walls are coated with hi-tech re-enforced stucco for long life. Capped with 2"+ thick custom made ledges hand made from stone composites. Caps will be antiqued and stained to look as though they have been there for 100+ years. Diameter is about 15 foot.

Out Door "L" Shaped Cooking Area: See photo for exact dimensions. Total area is about 550 sq. ft. The slab and supporting pilings below ( for future arched columns ) is steel re-enforced concrete. Plan is to continue the Spanish Mission / Italian Villa theme and build 4 large arch ways on the inside of the "L". Walls will be stucco with stone trim and roof will be clay tile like the EAB. Long sides are about 34 feet with a width of about 12 feet. Build on it as is or continue the area by filling in the "L" to make a square for a building over 1150 sq ft. Hard work is all done. Underground electrical and water are in place.
The cooking area will feature a 48" X 48" wide gas assisted wood burning pizza oven. ( see photo below ) Other equipment will be a stainless steel 30" double sink, 60" X 32" charcoal pit with rotisserie and 2 gas (propane) 8" burners. There is plenty of under counter space for refrigerator and or other storage. This structure will have a fireplace in the seating area and will have full electrical and water hook ups.
